Case Study

Raising money for medical research into Australia’s toughest diseases is really important to me.

In 2024, Mila and I signed up to Run Before the Sun (now Run for Research) and walked 3km every day to raise funds for the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research, led eagerly by my Golden Retriever, Chester, who reminded me at approximately 4:52pm that it was time for walkies!!!

Last July I had a skin check for a mole that I had checked and cleared twice last year. This doctor recommended that I have a biopsy, and the results confirmed it was a melanoma. After having the initial area excised, I was then booked in for surgery and further biopsies to ensure the cells hadn’t spread to my lymph nodes.

After having just given birth a month earlier, the news came as a bit of a shock as I tried to navigate life with a newborn while also being immobile from the excision and surgery. After the second biopsy, the results thankfully came back with no indication that it had spread.

While I wasn’t able to walk 100% while my skin graft healed, I realised during this time that even being able to walk at all is something we take for granted every day, when some are not able to. This is why I decided to take part in Run Before the Sun while also fundraising for medical research to help those who have been through far more than I have.

I was fortunate to have such generous friends, family members and colleagues who collectively helped me raise over $1,737. This year I will be taking part in Run for Research 2025 to continue my support for ground-breaking medical research into cancer, heart disease and diabetes in support of the 5 million Aussies currently living with these horrible diseases!
