Christelle’s Story
In 2024, Christelle signed up for Run Before the Sun (now Run for Research) with her baby Mila and her Golden Retriever, Chester, as walking buddies. What began as a daily 3km challenge quickly became much more personal. Just a month after giving birth, Christelle was diagnosed with melanoma following a routine skin check and had to undergo surgery and biopsies to ensure it hadn’t spread.
Recovering from surgery while adjusting to life as a new mum wasn’t easy, but Christelle says it gave her perspective. “Even being able to walk at all is something we take for granted,” she shared. Her commitment to the challenge became a way to celebrate recovery, while also raising funds for life-saving research at the Harry Perkins Institute.
Christelle’s determination inspired her community, and together they raised an incredible $1,737, making her the 3rd highest individual fundraiser for 2024. She joined both event meet-ups and even won a year’s supply of coffee through a fundraising competition. Her story is a powerful reminder of why every step – and every donation – matters.

Doug’s Story
In 2016, Doug’s world changed forever when his mum passed away from cancer. Living on the other side of the world made the experience even harder. Doug recalls the heartbreak of racing home and arriving at the hospital just in time to hold her hand and speak to her in her final moments.
Motivated by this deeply personal loss, Doug decided to support Perkins to help fund better treatments and cures. “I hope one day medical research for deadly cancers like hers will lead to better treatments and cures so people like her – our mums, wives, sisters and children – get to live longer, healthier lives,” he shared.
In 2024, Doug joined the team Two Girls and a Grandad, one of the most engaging teams in the challenge. Together they raised an incredible $1,914. His story is a moving reminder of why supporting research is so vital.

Nikki’s Story
In 2019, Nikki and Joel’s lives were shattered when their son Samson passed away at just six weeks old, after a sudden cardiac arrest caused by a rare inherited genetic condition called PPA2. For over a year, they had no answers about why it had happened.
Eventually, through a genetic study, they learned the cause. By miraculous chance, their firstborn, Declan, had not inherited the mutation. With this knowledge, they were able to use preimplantation genetic testing IVF, and later welcomed their daughter Colbie into their family.
Nikki says she feels immense gratitude for the life-saving research happening at the Perkins, which had played a role in identifying PPA2 just a few years earlier. Her journey shows the profound impact research can have – offering answers, hope, and healthier futures.
